Meet Mary Kom the first boxer to win five gold medals at the World Championships. Mary Kom who grew up in Kangathel, a small village in Manipur, had always been interested in sports since her childhood. She began boxing in 2000 and being a quick learner it took her only two weeks to learn the basics. Her parents were completely against her taking up boxing but with all her determination and strong will she joined Sports Authority of India to pursue her dream of becoming a world class pugilist. She underwent an intensive training from coach and mentor, Shri. Ibomcha Singh and at the age of 18, Mary made her debut at the first Women’s World Boxing Championships in Pennsylvania, USA. She got home a silver medal in the 46-kg weight category and a year later, she went on to win the gold at the second Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA) World Women’s Senior Boxing Championships at Antalya, Turkey. In 2008, she returned from a two-year maternity break to clinch her fourth boxing gold in World Championships which instantly won her the title “Magnificent Mary’. We truly hope Mary Kom’s inspiring journey to international fame and success motivates the young boxing champions of the country.
